Mrs. Joan J. (Keane) Roche, of Waltham, died Wednesday, January 4, 2012 in Golden Living Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in West Newton. She was 93.
Joan was born on October 17, 1918 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada a daughter of the late Maurice and Agnes (Nelligan) Keane. At the age of 7 her family returned to the United States settling in Cambridge. She was a graduate of the former Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School and the former Burdett Business School in Boston. After marriage to Patrick J. Roche in 1959 at the former St. Theresa of the Little Flower Church in Watertown she and her husband moved to Waltham in 1962 to raise and educate their family. Prior to raising her three children she worked as a secretary at The Arthur D. Little Company in Cambridge.
Married at the age of 40 her children recall how their mother was an active woman even before her marriage. Athletic in nature she enjoyed many activities including skiing and other sports. Talented with needle and thread she was an accomplished seamstress and talented with crotchet. With her love of all things Irish and proud of her heritage she made each costume for her children when they took Irish step dancing classes and competitions.
Her husband, Patrick J. Roche died January 23, 1992. She is also predeceased by her twin sister, Judith Keane and brother, Maurice Keane and her granddaughters, Christine Griffiths and Mary Walsh.
She leaves her children, Joseph R. Roche and his wife, Barbara, of Randolph, Joanne M. Walsh and her husband, Steven, of Lynn and Steven M. Roche and his girlfriend, Mary Ann Williamson, of Lowell; her sister, Mary O'Connell of Northport, Florida; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joan's life by gathering to visit in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Saturday morning, January 7th, from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Saint Paul's Cemetery, Arlington.
