Waltham – Mr. Gildo 'John' Piantedosi, of Waltham, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 24, 2012. He was 89.
John was born in Watertown on January 4, 1923, a son of the late Antonio and Rose (Cianci) Piantedosi. He was raised in Waltham and had been a resident for the past 88 years. John graduated from Waltham High School, Class of 1941 and after that went to work as a plumbers apprentice at the Charlestown Navy Yard.
During World War II he served proudly with the United States Army in southern France, Rome, Anzio, and throughout central Europe. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead and The American Theater Campaign Ribbon.
For many years John was an owner operator of his own trucking business working out of the former Massachusetts Broken Stone Company in Weston. He later worked as a carpenter and retired from the Waltham schools maintenance department.
He was a past president and treasurer of the Sacred Heart Holy Name Society, a church usher and a member of Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree. John worked on the rebuilding campaign for the new Sacred Heart Church in Waltham and initiated the saying "Give from your heart for the Sacred Heart."
John was a quiet man, who in his spare time enjoyed being in his wood shop, working in his vegetable garden, and being with his family. He loved to travel, especially to see his extended family in Pennsylvania. He was an avid sports enthusiast who loved to watch the local professional teams.
He was the loving husband of Marion L. (Olivo) Piantedosi for the past 66 years and the father of Anthony J. Piantedosi and his wife, Susan, and Peter J. Piantedosi and his wife, Deborah, all of Waltham; the proud grandfather of Paul, Brian, Mark, Matthew, and David Piantedosi and the beloved uncle of Catherine Battaglia Brown of Waltham, Daniel and Adrienne Swenson of Waltham and Teresa and Rafaela Pelligrini of Florence Italy. He also leaves his sister, Ann Marino of Foxboro and many nieces and nephews.
John was the brother of the late Elvira Battaglia and Evelyn Watson.
Family and friends will honor and remember John's life by gathering at the celebration of his Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2012 in Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham. Burial will be private.
