Waltham - Mrs. Dorothy G. (Ramsey) Arnold, of Waltham, died Monday, June 18, 2012 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She was 95.

Dorothy was born on May 22, 1917 in East Templeton, a daughter of the late George and Flora (Blanchard) Ramsey-Fontaine, and was a lifelong Waltham resident. She began working at the Waltham Watch Factory and later for the Raytheon Company. Dorothy also worked in housekeeping at The Fessenden School in Newton.

Dorothy also worked in the cafeteria for the Waltham Public School System including the Whittemore School and the Fitch School for many years, retiring in 1982. Among her interests she was talented with needle and thread; crotchet, cooking and above all, loved working in her yard and gardens. She was a member of Saint Charles Borromeo Parish.

Her husband, George L. Arnold, died January 4, 1989. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Timothy Arnold and great-grandchild, Casey Nicholson and her siblings, Pauline Rodman, Cecilia Stewart, Mabel Hudon, Loretta Thieme and Paul Ramsey.

She leaves her children, Lawrence H. Arnold and his wife, Laurie, of Milford, Lorraine A. Bradley and her husband, Daniel, of Waltham, James R. Arnold and his wife, Fara, of Longmont, Colorado and Frances M. Arnold of Waltham; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and many friends and staff from the Epoch Senior Healthcare Center in Weston.

Family and friends will honor and remember Dorothy's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, June 22nd from 5 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to The Blessed Sacrament Chapel of Saint Charles Borromeo Church, 51 Hall Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.

Dot and my mother, June Poirier, were good friends. I always remembering my mom talking about "Dot Arnold" and now wish I had paid more attention to her stories as Dot was one of her favorite people. My sympathy to your family on the loss of your beloved Mother and Grandmother.

Dotty was such a vibrant part of the Epoch community. She was faithful about attending our Catholic offerings and our knitting and crocheting groups. I loved how she was teaching and helping the residents that needed a little help w/ their projects. My fondest memory was how she helped with her knowledge of bunnies on bunny day. She was great and we will miss her terribly.

Mrs. Arnold was my next door neighbor. When my mother was ill she would come over as often as she could to visit. She always lifted my mother's spirits and made her smile. Mom always looked forward to these visits. Thank you Dot for making my mother smile. I am sure the two of you are smiling and chatting now.

My mother, Mary Noone and Dot were dear friends for many years. I remember how they both enjoyed talking for hours. After my mother got sick she would often ask me about Dot. They were able to reconnect briefly at Epoch. I remember the day I drove my mom to Dot's birthday party, the picture made me smile.

As a child, I was always in awe of this photograph of my mother and her german shepard dog, Rinney. The framed photograph was kept way in the back of my attic bedroom closet, hidden. I would take a flashlight and creep into the closet to look at this picture. We were not allowed to have pets, and to think my mom had this beautiful dog, kept my imagination running.
I do not remember too much about Rinney, accept that he was let out during the day to roam. With his family, he was extremely protective and barked at anyone who knocked on the door. In his later years, he became blind. I think in some way, Rinney was always my dog, too.

Sometime during the mid to late 1970's, my Mom asked if I would drive herself, her sisters; Aunt Loretta and Aunt Mabel and her Aunt Alida to East Templeton to visit an aunt they hadn't seen in a long time. The entire ride there the three sisters giggled and laughed like young girls. It was a time when I realized my Mom was also a real person. I have fondly thought of that ride a few times through the years. I'll miss Mom, but I have comfort knowing you are in a good place. Love, Jim

Early Monday morning (6/18/2012), Lorraine got a call from the hospital. Lorraine and I left to be with Dorothy. When we reached the hospital, we were led into a waiting room in the ICU at Newton Wellesley Hospital. The room was empty. I saw on the table a paper back novel, a western. The pages were still open a bit with the cover not quite closed. My first thought was that George, her husband, who enjoyed reading westerns, and who passed on in 1989, was there earlier in spirit and patiently waiting to once again see Dorothy, his beloved wife.
Dorothy, you will always be in my heart and on my mind.

This past April on a Sunday morning, Gram excitedly asked two of her friends if they would like to get dolled up in their Sunday best and go out for the morning. She told them a bus would be coming to take them and others from Epoch to brunch and for a ride around town. As she and her girl friends waited patiently in the lobby, one asked when everyone else and the bus would be arriving. Gram responded “April Fools” and quickly wheeled herself as fast as she could down the halls of Epoch, giggling the whole way. The staff was in stitches with laughters, her friends unfortunately, not so much. Thank goodness my Aunt Lolly arrived soon after and offered a truce by taking them out for ice cream. When asked what was her earliest memory, my mother responded as follows.

I was around four years old. We lived in a basement apartment in Gardner, MA on Oriole St. Mabel, Paul and I were sent out into the yard. We were told to watch for the doctor. When the doctor comes, we will have a new baby. When the doctor came, we asked if he had the baby. It was Pauline.
I remember my father would take a table cloth and draw a parcheesi game on the felt side. We also played hopscotch and marbles.
During the day, my mother would wash clothes, and at night she would iron and sew. We washed and dried clothes by hand.

My mother was the most caring and giving person. Up to her last days, she befriended all and asked for nothing in return. I am so thankful I share her most wonderful genes, and will take these gifts and share them with my children, family and friends.
I miss you very much and will always remember the love you gave. I will keep you in my heart and prayers, always.
