Mr. Charles E. Mansfield, of Marlborough, formerly of Waltham, died Saturday, December 31, 2011 in Sudbury Pines Nursing Facility. He was 89.

He was born on October 28, 1922 in Waltham a son of the late Albert and Edith (Bigham) Mansfield. Mr. Mansfield was a 1939 graduate of Waltham High School and attended The Huntington Prep School in Boston. During World War II he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Sumter.

After the war, Charles enrolled in Curry College where he earned a Diploma in Radio with Liberal Arts in 1952 and a Bachelor of Science in Oratory in 1954. Charlie was an avid collector of Big Band and Swing Era music and enjoyed several years as a Radio Announcer for WHAV in Haverill and WESX in Salem. He then worked as a case manager for the Department of Public Welfare in Waltham for over 20 years until his retirement. He was also a long time taxi driver for Waltham Red Cab.

In addition to music, Charlie enjoyed numerous hobbies, including gardening, reading mystery novels, Pittsburgh Pirates baseball and men's softball. For many years he managed the Pirates of Waltham's Men's Slow-Pitch League; winning city Championships in 1967, 1968 and 1971. He was a lifetime member of the Waltham Lodge of Elks #953 and a member of American Legion Post #156.

His wife of 58 years, Marion E. (Lyons) Mansfield died November 24, 2002. He is also predeceased by his sister, Edith Scamman.

He leaves his children, Marcia A. Wong and her husband, Richard, of North Grafton, Sandra Chase Mansfield of Waltham, Charles B. Mansfield and his wife, Nancy, of Gardner and Ross D. Mansfield and his wife, Deborah of Derry, New Hampshire. He leaves eight grandchildren: Shawn and Michael Cleveland, Adrienne and Allyson Kirkland and David, Eric, Andrew and Jonathan Mansfield and four great grand children: Angelia, Ariel, Hope and Trinity.

Family and friends will honor and remember Charles' life by gathering at 11 am on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, Waltham, where the Funeral Service will be held at 12 Noon. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
