Mrs. Catherine M. (MacRae) McLaughlin, of Waltham, died Friday, January 6, 2012 in Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Chelsmford. She was 96.
Catherine was born on October 17, 1915 in Nova Scotia, Canada a daughter of the late Duncan and Catherine Ann (MacDonald) MacRae and moved to the United States at the age of 1 shortly after the untimely death of her father. She graduated from the former Roxbury Catholic High School in Boston. Married in Charlestown she also lived in South Boston before moving to Waltham many years ago.
She worked in the office at the former Rubin H. Donnelly Corporation in Boston before staying at home to raise her family.
Catherine was a talented sewer and enjoyed knitting and crotchet. She also is remembered for always loving to sing and an untaught ability to accompany music by piano. An avid reader in her later years as her sight failed her and she became legally blind she loved listening to books on tape. A devout Catholic she was a member of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church in Waltham.
She is predeceased by her husband, Michael J. McLaughlin; her children, Catherine A. Vaughn, Paul A. McLaughlin and Michael J. McLaughlin Jr. and her siblings, Raymond Coffey and Louise Aptaker.
She leaves her daughters, Jeanne M. Rizzitano and her husband, Victor, of Townsend and Christine F. McCarty and her husband, Tom, of Wilmington, Vermont; her son-in-law, Ronald J. Vaughan of Waltham; her daughter-in-law, Mary McLaughlin of California; her brother-in-law, Edward Aptaker of Westwood; also survived by 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; nieces & nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Catherine's life by gathering to visit in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday morning from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
